Expedition cruise basics…

The Svalbard archipelago is located half way between North Cape and North Pole. This region is home of polar bears, arctic foxes, seals, reindeers, numerous of birds and walrus. But Svalbard is also characterized by great landscapes of high peaks, glaciers and beautiful tundra areas ! The history is also fascinating, from the early whalers and sealers to the coal mining period.

About the program and itinerary…

Day 1: Longyearbyen
Arrival to Longyearbyen and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2 to 8: Svalbard
You will start your adventure in Svalbard by exploring Longyearbyen and in the afternoon you will embark the expedition ship Stockholm and sail out. Here are some examples of places you may visit during your travel:
Prins Karls Forland: this narrow strip of land is covered by a magnificent and snow-covered mountain chain. The island is also home to many seabirds, harbour seals and walruses.
Virgohamna, Danskøya: two of the most courageous attempts to reach the North Pole started on the island of Danskøya. Swedish balloonist Andrée made an attempt with a hydrogen balloon and American journalist Wellman started with an airship. There are still interesting remnants from these expeditions left on this site.
Fantastic fjords: Svalbard offers the visitor countless spectacular fjords. During our journey you will explore a few of them such as Liefdefjorden, Krossfjorden, Raudfjorden, Kongsfjorden…
North Spitsbergen and & Hinlopen Strait: North of Spitsbergen you might meet the edge of the pack ice. Not many ships venture here and you can marvel at the silence and grandeur of this icy landscape. Chances of meeting polar bears increase as you sail along the ice floes. If the ice allows you enter Hinlopen Strait. Here is Alkefjellet, an impressive, basaltic cliff, which is the home to an estimated 200 000 Brünnich’s guillemots. You may also continue into the beautiful bay Palanderbukta on Nordaustlandet.

Day 9: Longearbyen
Early morning, disembarkation from the ship at Longearbyen harbour.
